A Friendly Guide to Canada’s Visit Visa Requirements

You’re daydreaming about sipping maple syrup in Quebec, the hiking trails of the Rockies, or wandering the streets of Toronto? Canada’s calling your name! But first, you’ll need to figure out the whole visit visa situation. Don’t worry, I’ve got that covered. Let’s break it down, step by step.

  1. Do You Need a Visa?

First of all: Not all people need a visa to go to Canada. Whether you require one or not depends on your nationality. People from visa-exempt countries are allowed to enter Canada without a visa, but they must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Those who belong to visa-required countries should file an application for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

  1. Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

If you do require a visa, the TRV is your golden ticket. Here’s what you need to know:

Application Form: You’ll need to fill out the IMM 5257 form. Make sure to answer all questions accurately.

Passport: Your passport must be valid. It should have at least one blank page (not the last page) for the visa sticker.

Photographs: You will require two recent passport-sized photographs. Be very careful with the photo requirements, or your application might get delayed.

Proof of Funds: You have to prove that you have sufficient money to sustain yourself during your stay. Bank statements, pay stubs, or letters from employers can be presented.

Travel Itinerary: It includes your dates of travel, flight details, and accommodation information. It need not be a confirmed ticket; it is merely a detailed plan.

Purpose of Visit: Explain why you’re visiting Canada. Is it for tourism, visiting family, attending a conference, or something else?

Ties to Your Home Country: To prove you’ll return home after your visit, provide evidence of ties to your home country. This could be a job, property, family, or other commitments.

  1. Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

If you’re from a visa-exempt country, you’ll need an eTA instead of a TRV. The eTA is linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Here’s the scoop:

Application: The eTA application is online and usually takes just a few minutes. Have your passport, email address, and a credit or debit card ready.

Fee: There is a small fee required to obtain an eTA, mostly about CAD 7.

Approval: Applications for eTA are approved within minutes; however, it would be wise to apply at least some days prior to your flight.

  1. Biometrics

Canada has implemented biometrics for most visa applicants, which include fingerprints and photo. If you are required to provide biometrics, you will receive information after submitting your visa application. You will have to visit a visa application center to have your biometrics taken. The cost of biometrics is usually about CAD 85.

  1. Application Submission

Mail the application form, complete with all attachments, to the Canadian visa office nearest to your home or through the IRCC website. Double-check that everything is included so there are no delays.

  1. Processing Time

Processing times depend on your country of residence and the time of year. In general, it takes several weeks to a couple of months. It’s a good idea to apply early in advance of your trip.

  1. Medical Exam

Sometimes, you might be asked to undergo a medical exam, depending on your planned length of stay in Canada for more than six months or even when you take up certain kinds of jobs. You will get a notice about it.

  1. Interview

Sometimes, you will be interviewed at the visa office. You should be ready to provide answers about your travel plans and your ties to your home country.

  1. Decision

Once your application is processed, you’ll receive a decision. If approved, you’ll get your visa or eTA electronically linked to your passport. If denied, you’ll receive an explanation. Don’t be discouraged – you can reapply if circumstances change or you can provide additional information.

  1. Arrival in Canada

Now’s the time! When you arrive in Canada, you will have to clear customs and immigration. Be prepared with your passport, visa or eTA, and supporting documents. The border officer may ask you a few questions to clarify your plans.

We offer immigration advice sessions as face to face appointments at all of our UAE offices, or via the phone.
